15th-22nd July: The Choir enjoyed a trip to Sicily, as guests of the the Diocese of Trapani. We sang in two concerts and visited an ancient Greek temple and amphitheatre, historic churches, and of course the beach! We also enjoyed a day sailing with the Trapani Match Race club and a scout camp with the local Catholic scouts.
The last week of June, featured our annual Sports Day, Prize Day and theatrical productions; this year, we were treated to The Wizard of Oz and a special abridgement of Shakepseare's Henry V.
Thursday 22nd May, we celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi with Solemn Mass and a procession of the Blessed Sacrament around the grounds.
Thursday 8th May, the 11-13-yr-olds played a short cricket match of 12 overs each way against the BritishSchool of Paris, in Paris. (See photo below.) We lost 64-32, but very much enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of the BSP, and a stay with host families. Thank-you, BSP!
On Friday 9th May the boys visited the sites of Paris (Sacre Coeur, Les Invalides, Les Tuileries) and ended the day with a meal at an Italian restaurant and a night at the Aloha Youth Hostel.
From 10th-12th we participated in the Paris - Chartres Pilgrimage (over 100km on foot!). We all enjoyed 3 days of camping, and the weather was splendid. At the end of the walk, the boys sang at the Cathedral before a Solemn High Mass for over 8,000 pilgrims.
The Pilgrimage has been an annual event over the Penetecost weekend for many years and we always like to take as many boys as possible from Chavagnes.
On Monday 28th April the College was delighted to host a reunion for 'petit-seminaristes' who left Chavagnes in 1958, aged 15. The 50th anniversary gathering attracted eight priests and an Abbot, all Chavagnes alumni, as well as over a dozen other old boys with their wives. Pontifical Mass for the Feast of St Louis de Montfort, at which our boys sang and served, was celebrated by The abbot of the Abbey of Bec-Helouin in Normandy. This was followed by a festive lunch for all concerned.
Jose Senosiain Diaz (from Pamplona), who joined us at Chavagnes four years ago, has been offered an unconditional place to read Law at the University of Navarre from September 2008. Congratulations to Jose.
Choir Trip to Sicily planned for July. Thanks to the generosity of the Bishop of Trapani, and of some of our Italian friends, we are planning a Choir Trip to this historic Sicilian town from 14th-23rd July (15th-22nd for UK boys.) Flights will be via Stansted. Details to follow, but please reserve dates now.
13th March, 4pm. Rugby 7s vs. L'Esperance. Under 14s and Under 18s. Both teams faced opponents who were larger and older, but acquitted themselves honourably. (Seniors lost 55-5; Juniors lost 75-15). Try-scorers were Reece Evans, David Mobberley and Peter Morrison. Below: a film of the Seniors' match:

On Wednesday 6th February 2008, the College held an inter-house debate between Cathelineau and Rochejacquelein houses. The motion was 'This House believes corporal punishment would improve morale at Chavagnes'. Speakers for the motion were Mr McDermott, Jose Senosiain, Nathan Hopkin and Luke James-Perry. Opposing were Mr Asch, Flavien Sola, Matthew Landells and Maximillian Micallef-Eynaud.
During Question Time Chairman Brother John Moylan offered a few reminiscences from the heyday of corporal punishment, which everyone found most informative and entertaining.
In what turned out to be a humorous and good-humoured debate, the standard of delivery and argument was high, especially given the youth of some of the speakers. The motion was carried 11 votes to 5, (with speakers and tellers not voting). The aristocratic vote (a Jury of two Masters and a House Captain) was also unanimously for the Motion.
NEWS from Chavagnes (not all of it new...)
Science Week
Dr Peter Hodgson, Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford and distinguished nuclear physicist, spent a week at the College in mid October. He gave a series of talks on scientific, philsophical and historical topics to staff and to boys of all ages.
He participated in a debate team, arguing (against his convictions) that "This House believes that scientists have done the world more harm than good". Scientists were defended by a team of four boys plus Doctor Conlon. Much to Dr Hodgson's surprise the motion was carried.
